How do I get my linux Ubuntu VM to boot from the hard disk?

$

Hi,

I have just installed esxi 6.0 on a Dell rack server, r630. I  then created a VM running Linux Ubuntu 64 bit, from an iso image on a DVD. I can see the vmdk file :

[root@localhost:~] ls -ltrh vmfs/volumes/datastore1/System1_3G_OMC/

total 154148872

-rw-------    1 root     root      147.0G Jul  9 17:32 System1_3G_OMC-flat.vmdk

But when I power on the VM, it tries to boot from the network, eventhough the hard disk option is set up in the Bios. It doesn't try any other option and repeatedly returns :

"Operating system not found, retrying boot now..."

I'm a newcomer to VMWare vSphere so I probably missed something when I created the VM.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Running OS X 10.10 Yosemite on ESXi 5.5

So I've read article after article about running OS X 10.9 on ESXi, but until recently hadn't seen any guidance on how to run 10.10. Then I saw an article that guided you through installing OS X 10.10 on VMWare Fusion by first downgrading the OS Selection from 10.10 to 10.9, then changing the compatibility to use Hardware Version 10 from 11, so that you could later upload the newly created VM to your ESXi 5.5 Server, and make a few modification including adding back in the config line smc.present = "TRUE", and voila, everything should magically work. But I've been stuck for a number of days now.

I tried the above steps, but every time I try to run the VM, I just get the grey VMWare boot loader screen that says failed to load operating system from SATA dis, then failed CDRom, then attempting network, then eventually failing completely. I even read up more on what people did on 10.9 and found another couple of config strings such as:

   smc.present = "TRUE"

   smbios.reflectHost = "TRUE"

    ich7m.present = "TRUE"

Once again, overtime I've made a change and tried it I'm left with the same exact outcome. Failure. Am I supposed to also have installed the ESXi unlocker script? Because I tried that earlier as well with no luck either, so I figured maybe I should be attempting this install without it, and re-installed the host OS without making any changes.

My config is as follows. Dell PowerEdge R610 with two Hex core 2.8Ghz Xeon Processors, 64GB memory and 6 148GB SAS drives So performance is definitely not an issue. I even have a Sinology ISCSI LUN created and attached with 4TB Storage.

Can Anyone help? Has anyone else successfully installed and is running OS X 10.10 on your ESXi 5.5 server? Mind you, I'm running the free version, so maybe theres limitations there also that I'm unaware of. But any and all advice you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Is it possible to create a OVF template or clone a VM without vCenter Server?

Hi, if I'm running a free basic ESXi6 host with vSphere client, is it possible to create any OVF templates or clone a VM?  The manual keeps referring steps that assumes I have vCenter Server installed and am using the web client.

While using CA signed keystore for agent, communication between agent and server is not happening

I am using 4.6.6.1 version of hyperic.

On which I have been trying to establish SSL communication between server and agent via CA signed certificates.

The steps that I followed are:

1) Generated a jks for hyperic-server (CA signed)

2) Generated a jks for hyperic-agent (CA signed -- CA is the same which I used for hyperic server jks generation)

3) I followed the below steps mentioned in vFabric Documentation

vFabric Documentation Center

Reconfigure Hyperic for Trusted SSL Certificates

  1.   Install and configure a trusted PKC12 format keystore for Hyperic Server:    For each Hyperic 4.6 Agent reporting to the Hyperic Server:
    1.

Obtain an SSL certificate from your CA and install it on the Hyperic Server host.

    2.   Open ServerHome/conf/hq-server.conf in a text editor.
    3.   Set the value of accept.unverified.certificates to "false".
    4.   Define the location of your trusted keystore with the server.keystore.path property.
    5.   Define the password for your trusted keystore with the server.keystore.password property.
    6.   Save your changes.
    7.   Restart the Hyperic Server.
    1. Obtain an SSL certificate from your CA and install it on the Hyperic Agent host.

    2.   Open AgentBundle/AgentHome/agent.properties in a text editor.
    3.   Set the value of agent.setup.acceptUnverifiedCertificate to "false".
    4.   Define the location of your trusted keystore with the agent.keystore.path property.
    5.   Define the password for your trusted keystore with the agent.keystore.password property.
    6.   Save your changes.
    7.   Restart the Hyperic Agent.

4) In the EAM_KEYSTORE table of hyperic database I see the CA signed keystore entry for hyperic-server but I do not see the CA signed keystore entry for hyperic-agent.

Because of which agent and server communication is not happening.

Observation is that self signed (hyperic default keystore) keystore entry of hyperic agent is seen in database table EAM_KEYSTORE even after performing CA signed keystore process.

Could you please provide me the cause for this behavior.

I am not able to establish SSL communication between server and agent because of this issue

View 2-facor authentication

Hello everyone,

I would need to explain the 2-factor authentication proces implemented in VMware view. Is the combination of user account/password still required (as on of the factors) or can be disabled? The reason why I am asking is that the customer has implemented OTP authentication using third-party technologies, so the OTP is the only thing the user has to know to log on, and users do not know their passwords. The technology allows authentication on VPN using the RADIUS server as well.

And now VMware View - If 2-facor authentication is enabled using RADIUS server, the user has to enter passcode (which is the OTP), and if the user is successfully authenticated, then he/she is asked to enter his/her domain credentials (however user does not know his/her password). Is it possible to remove the requirement to authenticate using domain credentials (and leave only OTP via RADIUS authentication in place), or does the 2-factor mean that the user/password will always be required as on factor?

Thank you & kind regards,

Petr

How to change the Nework label of VM in vCLoud 5.5

Hi,

I am doing the automated installation of my application in virtual machine.

First the VM (Application VM) will boot from One of the virtual machine (FEWS) using the dhcp, for this i have created the vAPP network called vFEWS-Install.

Once the installation is completed, i will change the network label of VM (APP VM) to actual VLAN network. Then it will be reachable over the network.

Now i have automated installation using power cli, except the network label change.  Can anyone help me with proper command to change the network label of VM in cloud.

Please let me know if you need any more details.

Thanks & Regards

SSD Failure on VSAN

I have an ESXi cluster with 3 hosts and storage fired from VSAN. The VSAN cluster has 2 SAS disks and 1 SSD disk from each host. 1 of my SSDs in the disk group has failed. I need to replace 1 SSD as it reported failure but it warns me of removing the disk group. How should I go forward as removing a disk group on 1 host might lead to data loss ?

Hello everybody,

the old issue about geting Error 29163 during the installation has never been answered.

I keep getting "Error 29163. Could not copy file c:\windows\temp\converter-agent.xml.", and the installation process is rolled back.

My pcis a freshly installed Win7 64bit, and I'm trying to install latest vwersion of Converter (VMware-converter-en-6.0.0-2716716.exe) in standalone mode.

New-AlarmActionTrigger: A specified parameter was not correct

$

Hi everybody,

I'm trying to add a new alarm action to all my vCenter alarm definitions. Nothing fancy and because I'm lazy, I tried to utilize PowerCLI for this. This is my small script:

Get-AlarmDefinition | % {  $_ | Get-AlarmAction | Remove-AlarmAction -Confirm:$false    $_ | New-AlarmAction -Email -To 'user@domain.tld' | % {  $_ | New-AlarmActionTrigger -StartStatus 'Yellow' -EndStatus 'Red' -Repeat:$false  $_ | New-AlarmActionTrigger -StartStatus 'Green' -EndStatus 'Yellow' -Repeat:$false   }
}

When I run it, the alarm action and both triggers are added. But during the add of the alarm trigger from 'Yellow' to 'Red', the following error occurs:

New-AlarmActionTrigger : 04.07.2015 16:59:25    New-AlarmActionTrigger        A specified parameter was not correct.
At C:\Users\patrick\AppData\Local\Temp\bcfe38ed-7669-43dd-a588-7e88e59d70c4.ps1:4 char:8
+         $_ | New-AlarmActionTrigger -StartStatus 'Yellow' -EndStatus 'Red' -Repeat:$fa ...
+              ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~    + CategoryInfo          : NotSpecified: (:) [New-AlarmActionTrigger], InvalidArgument    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : Client20_AlarmServiceImpl_NewAlarmActionTrigger_ViError,VMware.VimAutomation.ViCore.Cmdlets.Commands.Alarm.NewAlarmActionTrigger

Unfortunately I can't figure out what parameter isn't correct. The error only occurs for 'Yellow' to 'Red'. Any idea what is wrong or what I missed?

Thanks for advice!

Can vCOPS 5.x foundation still be deployed and used for free?

The title of this post says it all..

I have personally not seen tremendous value to some of the advanced features of vCOPs, yes I realize that is quite a bold statement, but there it is..  some value but not worth the price tag..

Why?  if you keep your cluster healthy with room for growth you shouldn't have to worry about whether or not you have the resources avaiable to squeeze in a few more VMs. if you have to battle with this dilemna then you don't have enough host capacity to support failover scenarios..  makes sense right?

Also, setting up custom dashboards was great, but then after providing access to them you realize that the interface is loaded with objects that most people don't understand, and they can be tricky, which creates a whole other support issue with your internal customers.

But I'm just ranting here, all I want to do is have access to good historical performance data, and the ability to create charts of performance at a whim with ease.. I do find vCOPs was great for this and very useful.

I am interested in understanding if I can still deploy vCOPS 5.7 or .8  foundation for free and make use of it, and if yes, can support be purchased for it?

NOTE to VMTN admins - selecting the right place for the post has genuinely taken a turn for the worse..  I can't even find "vCenter" as a place... are you serious??   or vRealize or vCOPs... WTF!

Storage Performance issues on ESXi6, LSI 9266-8i with Cachecade + RAID10

$

Hi All,

Im having a storage issue on my Esxi 6 Homelab, basically write speeds are all over the place and I have  I/O Latency issues, confirmed with esxtop. vCpu's have been trimmed on VM's to make sure its not vCPU ready time thats the cause.

My config is as follows:-

Lenovo TS140 with LSI 9266-8i (Latest Firmware).

RAID 10 with 4x WD RED Hard drives

Cachecade configured with 2 x OCZ Agility 3 (AGT3-25SAT3-120G - On compatability list) in Raid 1 and linked to the RAID 10 Virtual Drive.

Write Back is on (With BBU backup)

Disk Cache is OFF

In the test scenario i have 2 VM's, one a Windows 2012 Server and the other an Ubuntu 15.04 server.

I copy a 300 Gig file to each at the same time over the network to a share drive on each from a real Windows Client.

The surprising thing here is that i get WORSE performance using Cachecade than i do without. If i diasable cachecade i still get reasonably high latency ~400ms, with Cachecade latency is in the 1000's.

Additionally, when using WITHOUT cachecade i get a nice straight consistant copy speed line in the copying box (about 50MBps total for both, 25MBps each) and both seem to work at the same bandwidth rate even though it seems a little slow.

With Cachecade its all over the place, 1MBps then ~85, then down to 50, 20 etc.  The copy graph is like a rollercoaster.

So, is it my SSD's not working properly (SMART Passed OK)? Is the RAID10 slow?

Any ideas?

Strategy for testing Web Client via GUI automation (inclusion of automation swc files)

$

My company has developed a Plugin to the Web Client and our intent it to do some GUI Automation on it. The recommended strategy for automating Flex is to have some adobe automation files (automation.swc, automation_client.swc, automation_spark.swc, automation_dmv.swc) compiled into the application.

Obviously the Web Client does not have these compiled in, and we can compile our plugin with them, but for example the AdvancedDataGrid's on our custom pages are constructed with vmware grids com.vmware.widgets.controls::AdvancedDataGridEx classes so things that would help us with automation are not exposed.

There is also this idea of runtimeloading the files, however this seems like it's only valid on an application which is a single swc file.

This might not be the ideal place of this post but I have done some extensive searching and not come up with much.

Any suggestions, leads or other information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Sorry for English

vCenter Server was upgraded from 5.5 version to 6.0 completely. After this I trying to connect the esxi host to server and getting such error:

A general system error occured: Unable to get signed certificate for host: 1.99.15.31. Error: Failed to connect to the remote host, reason = rpc_s_connect_rejected (0x16c9a042). (382312514).

This is a fresh installation of esxi. I can connect to the host by c# client. Such situation with the host that was updated from 5.5 to 6.0 via Update Manager.

Thinapp 5.0, removable disk and ghost drive letters

I'm using some simple applications packaged with Thinapp 5.0.  When a thinapped V5 app is running and I eject a removable disk such as usb flash disk, the drive letter remain assigned.

When a removable disk is re-inserted, the next available letter will be assigned..

The only way to reclaimed the "ghost" driver letters is to close any thinapped application..

Any clues?

Study VCP550-DCV

Hello All,

I am studying for the VCP550-DCV Exam.

Now am practicing some practice exams and I am encountering some questions:

I have a question about the following question in the quiz for the vcp-DCV550 exam

Question: What is true about transparent memory page sharing?
Incorrect response(s):
It must be enabled on each host
Explanation: Transparent memory page sharing is enabled on ESX hosts by default.

I’ve read that tps is not enabled in 5.5 by default anymore:

http://blogs.vmware.com/security/2014/10/transparent-page-sharing-additional-management-capabilities-new-default-settings.html

So .. what would be the correct answer in a real exam situation?

Should I choose for the answer that it is enabled by default? Or not?

Here annother one from my Brian Atkinson Sybex  study guide (vcp-550)

What is the minimum GB of disk space required for the vcenter server appliance?

A: 7

B: 25

C: 50

D: 80

According to the book the correct anwser is A

VMware KB: Minimum requirements for the VMware vCenter Server 5.x Appliance

Here you can read that the minimum for versions 5.0 and 5.1 is 7 GB and the minimum for 5.5 is 70 GB..

When I look at my test vcenter appliance version 5.5 the used storage is 5.48 GB, so why is the requirement 70 GB??

I hope that the real exams are better!

Cheers,

ESXi 5.1 update to 5.5

Dear Experts,

We currently have an ESXi 5.1.0 build 1065491 installed with a Dell Customized Image. We would like to update to VMware ESXi 5.5 Update 2 (build 2068190). We have downloaded the Dell customized image from VMware ESXi 5.5 Update 2 Driver Details | Dell US.

Is it a simple matter of booting the VMware host from the .iso and then selecting update as opposed to install? Anything that we should consider before the update?

Thanks for your help.

How to stop Windows 7 start menu popup when switching between host and guest

$

I've got Fusion 7 pro running on a Mac OS X Yosemite based laptop (macbook pro) and have Windows 7 installed via Fusion as a guest operating system.  I typically use the CTRL + TAB keys to switch between applications and when I switch between a mac app and my fusion VM (Windows 7), it causes the Windows START button to be selected and it pops up in my way and I have to click away and then click again to focus on the windows app I want to work with.  Very annoying.  So...

1.  Does anyone else have this problem

2.  How did you solve it?

Thanks

10Gbe NICs

Hi All,

Just installed ESX5i on a DELL R320 with 10GbE PCI NIC connected to SFP+ switch.

ESX has correctly picked the NIC and speeds 10000 full etc. but the VM's are showing 1GB and being connected to Intel(R) PRO/1000MT Network Connection.

Should I be worried?  This is the first machine on the backbone so I can't test a physical transfer between machines at the moment.

I have created a task on vCenter 6.0.

Task name as is shown different on vSphere web client 6.0 and vSphere client 6.0.

Task name is shown correctly on vSphere client 6.0.

But on vSphere web client 6.0 there is additional '.label' attached at end of task name.

Attached web client screenshot for reference.

Move from one stand alone ESXi to another

Hi, what is the best way to move a virtual machine from one stand alone ESXi to another? Both hosts are on the same network but have no shared storage. Big test VMs that need to move and would like to avoid landing on a shared NAS or something like that.
