DX11 games acting very buggy on high end computer

Hello, I have a fresh installation of Workstation pro 16 on Fedora Workstation 32. I have an Nvidia 1080 TI gpu with the latest stable drivers from their website. My computer is AMD Ryzen 3950x with 128GB ram. 1TB nvme drive. I started up a fresh win10 vm and updated the os. The vm guest tools and dxdiag tool shows everything is good. I jumped into WoW on low settings. I dont get over 30ish fps, but it feels much less than that. its constantly sticking and jerking around. The mouse jumps all around too. Ive played with all the settings to no avail. Am I missing something?

Home Server: Boot & Storage Recommendations, please

$

tl;dr

I have a basic home server with one NVMe drive, multiple SSDs, and multiple (SATA) HDDs, plus multiple USB3 ports and an SD card reader.

What’s the best boot / storage configuration for good performance with a basic degree of resilience? Thank you.

More

First, a disclaimer:

In an ideal world I’d have multiple hosts, for redundancy and failover. I’d also have separate storage: a well-spec’d FreeNAS box with a decent SAS card and a healthy chunk of ECC memory, serving shares via NFS. But at the moment I don’t have those things; I’m trying to do the best I can with what I’ve got.

So:

BOOT

I’ve read some documentation and blog posts. I’ve seen recommendations to boot from SD card, but I’m a bit wary of this: my experience with SBCs (e.g. RPi) is that after a while - when the card starts to run out of write cycles - they can fail in interesting and unpredictable ways. I have experience booting OSes from USB as well (see FreeNAS, above); do you think this would be a better option?

STORAGE

In terms of “speed”: NVMe > SSD > HDD

…So I’m assuming:

SSDs (mirrored): VMs

HDDs (mirrored): other persistent data

NVMe: cache and ephemeral data (etc.)

Does that make sense? Is there a better way?

Thank you for reading Apologies for a long post.

P.S. Out-of-scope-but-still-relevant: the server has 32G of (non-ECC) RAM, and 5 x 1G Intel ethernet. My goal is to host no more than three “permanent” VMs (e.g. LAMP/LEMP), plus occasional others for experiments I can’t do - or don’t want to do - in a container / virtual environment. Thanks again.

vRO 7.6 Reload for Inventory

Hi,

Like in legacy client where we have a reload option when we right click on the inventory object -> reload.png. But in the vRO 7.6 web based HTML5 client i dont find this reload option under Dashboard->Administration->Inventory. Neither does a page refresh works. Is there something that can be done to reload these objects from web client? Or is it a missing feature?

Serious bug in Shared Folders feature in VmWare Workstation 8.x

Hi.

I see - there is a serious bug in that feature!

In particular scenario is following:

  • Enable Shared Folders feature for VM (let say = "D:\share" on host PC will be visible as "Z:\HostShare" on VM)
(here you can suspend/resume VM couple of times)
  • On VM, using a shell script copy all *.h, *.c* files from "Z:\HostShare\sandbox\modules\core\myApp1\source" to "D:\sandbox\modules\core\myApp1\source"
(here you can suspend/resume VM couple of times and then repeat the same copy-operation)
  • On host PC - open any of *.h, *.c* files which were copied on VM - edit it and try to save, Windows on host PC will report "file access error" - file is in-use and cannot be overwritten (or such)

Solution:

  • go to VM, open VM Settings, disable Shared Folders feature, click [OK], then enable Shared Folders feature back

As I can see this bug is exists in VmWare Workstation for quite a long time (more than 3 years).

Could you pleas fix it, finally?

The idea is - Shared Folders feature MUST NOT EXCLUSIVELY LOCK FILES which were accessed from VM. Especially when these files were closed/released on VM.

Thank you in advance.

Dmitry.

Having an issue trying to install VIBs using "Install-VMHostPatch -LocalPath <Path to File>". Getting the following error: Error occured when connecting to host  Response status code does not indicate success: 404 (Not Found). Error only happens with ESXi 6.7, no issues running the same command against 6.5.

Enabling an HBA for use in ESXi 6.5

It's been just under a week since we figured out the last issue, but now I'm getting pretty close to the end-game. I'll try to keep it short, for all of you busy experts out there.

I have an HBA (LSI SAS9201-16e) connected to a drive cage (Kingwin MKS-435TL) that is holding four SAS HDDs (IBM Storwize V7000 98Y3241). I wish to be able to pass each individual drive to a different VM. I originally thought that this would involve SR-IOV, but now I am not so sure. Instead of wandering around in the dark, I'll ask this:

What is the recommended method for enabling passthrough of individual drives, that are connected via an HBA?

If you want/need more info about my setup, tell me - I'll give you the info you request.

Here are some of the sources that I've read thus far:

I've had no luck getting it to work thus far:

Ciao,

Grazie.

InstallBuilder autoupdate: use Maven Central Repository URL as download location

Dear all,

We have moved the AutoUpdate executable files to the Maven Central Repository.

Our update.xml file looks correct (attached).

When the AutoUpdate is launched, it detects a new version available, but then it gives an error downloading the file, it tries 3 times and it fails, even if that location is reachable from that computer.

What can be the problem? How can we get more information about the error? In the log files only a generic "Error downloading update. Retrying (1/3)" is reported.

If it can help you, attached you can find the error dump, generated running the AutoUpdate from command line with the command: $ ./autoupdate-linux-x64.run --debugtrace output.txt

Many thanks,

Stefano

ML inside Workstation VMs

I'd like to do machine learning inside a Workstation VM.  Host is Windows 10 2004.  I grant there's a settings check-box to accelerate 3d graphics, but this isn't the GPU use I'm thinking of.  How do I enable my laptop's second GPU for use by a VM for non-GUI tasks?

Geofencing iPads or what is the best way to deter theft?

We're handing out iPads to patients to keep them entertained while they aren't allowed to have visitors. I'm trying to prevent people from taking them home with them. Before I get started with anything, yes they're setup in DEP. What do you think would be the best way to either prevent people from taking them home or would encourage them to be returned? Physically locking them down isn't really feasible.

I thought setting up a geofence with the iPads would be the best thing to encourage them to be returned. I tried to setup a single app profile to install once they left our main campus, but it doesnt seem to do anything.

  • I enabled collection of location data
  • I configured an area
  • I installed Hub on all of the devices
  • I created a profile that puts the ipad in single app mode if it's in the area (I realize this is backwards)

The iPad won't install or uninstall the profile, I put it in my car and drove it home a few times and nothing changes. I've had an open ticket for a week or two, but they can't even tell me if this is possible.

Poor refreshing of windows in Unity Mode running VMWare Fusion 11 on MacOS and virtualizing Windows 10

I am running a 2018 Mac mini (i7, 16gb ram, 512gb SSD) with the latest version of MacOS and I am virtualizing Windows 10 which is on 1903 with the latest version of VMWare Fusion 11.

To start, there are no performance issues, my issue is strictly a graphical issue and it is exclusive to the Unity Mode, in Single or Full Screen Mode everything is just peachy.

In Unity Mode I am seeing some graphics issues whenever I drag a window across the screen. For example, lets say I have the calculator app open in Windows 10 using Unity Mode and I drag the window from the left side of my screen to the right side of my screen, the movement of the dragging is anything but smooth. It looks like animations and frames are dropping and moving the window looks jaggy and jerky but nothing is hanging and as soon as I stop dragging the window everything is fine. It’s strictly a graphical issue with Windows 10. I also see it in the animations when I minimize an Windows 10 program, except here I only sometimes see it. It appears to be random to me. And this only occurs with Windows 10 programs, with MacOS programs everything is smooth as one would expect.

I’ve tried reinstalling VMWare tools, changing cores to 1, 2, and 3, increasing VRAM from 1gb to 2gb, turning off 3D acceleration, and I see no changes.

Is this expected behavior? Or what would be the fix?

Clipboard sharing won't work between Windows 10 Host and Guest.

Can anyone help me with the issue where I am not able to share clipboard between Windows 10 Pro (both Guest and Host) while using the same Host Machine, clipboard works fine on Windows 7 and 8. I’ve tried everything like:

  • Uninstall VMware Tools, Reboot, Install and Reboot.
  • Manually add entries to the VMX file for clipboard.
  • Tried VMware Workstation and Player both.
  • Created New VMs and imported the existing virtual HDD.
  • Updated VMware from v15.x to latest v16

Windows versions are same for Windows 10 both Host and Guest and all VMs are for testing purpose only. None of them is shared or deployed.

vctl first thoughts

$

The docs pointed me here to express my thoughts on vctl.  So here goes.  I've got VMware Workstation 16.0.0 and vctl 1.1.0 on a Windows 10 2004 host.

I've been eagerly awaiting Workstation 16's release because of this "run containers in Workstation" feature.  It's one of the main reasons I've chosen to purchase an upgrade.

The first thing I noticed is vctl is using the old Docker syntax.  For example, `docker container list` and `docker image rm` are much simpler to remember and teach than `docker ps` and `docker rmi`.  I grant vctl is only v1, but only supporting the old syntax makes it feel like Docker 1.13.  In theory it should be easy(ish) to shim the other cli arguments into calling the same underlying functions.

Supporting kind right out of the gate is brilliant.  But it makes me curious:  What's the DOCKER_HOST and DOCKER_CERT_PATH env vars I need to get regular docker.exe to run?  Knowing vctl merely proxies to containerd running in the VM it just started, I wonder if I could get more compatibility with existing tools by connecting directly.  (For comparison, run `minikube docker-env` and it rigs up regular docker.exe to minikube's docker-compatible pipe.)  With these values, I could also easily rig up VS Code Remoting into the VMware-hosted container runtime, and rig up a dozen other GUI and CLI tools, unleashing a whole new volume of opportunities.

`vctl kind` downloading kind.exe and kubectl.exe is brilliant.  But both are a version out of date.  Perhaps vctl kind could use the GitHub releases API to grab the latest version?  I'm also curious what would happen if I did download the latest and stick them earlier in my path.  Are these official releases?  Or are they VMware look-alikes?  Creating a fake docker.exe shortcut is completely cheating.  Because the command set is only sort-of compatible, and because the console output is formatted so differently, I'd rather this wasn't even an option.  (It's self-documented if I must also change my script from docker.exe to vctl.exe.)  All else being equal, I'd rather the real docker.exe could shim into place.  But barring this option, no docker.exe is better.

I ran `vmrun list`, grabbed the path into ~\.r\vms\kind-control-plane\ and was curious.  I went into VMware Workstation GUI, File -> Open, pointed it at this VM, and wonderfully froze VMware Workstation.  (Oops.)  Either the open dialog should block me from doing this or it should show me only the VM details, never giving me the console window.  The crash is an unfortunate answer.

All-in-all, I see great promise here.  It is indeed really rough, but I grant it's only a v1, so I can forgive.  I could see this turning really great in time.

Questions about the sequence of vRA reboots

Hi, all.

I need reboot the vRA server, because reset root password.

So, I just need only restart the vRA server.

I'm not use vRA Load balancing.

I think I just need to consider SQL and IaaS, is it okay to restart only vRA?

Regards.

ESXi 6.7:

Hi all,

Recently i installed ESXi on my Dell PowerEdge R920, 4x Xeon 4880 v2 (2.5Ghz), 512GB RAM DDR3, RAID0 of 4x SAS HDD 10k.

I created a new VM for openSUSE Tumbleweed with 2 CPUs, 16GB RAM and 10GB HDD. Installation ok.

But in use it's very slow, the system is not responsive at all, sometimes I have to wait a few seconds to perform an action.

I missed something or what? Do I need to install drivers maybe?

Thank you for any help.
