EVC/Compatibility question:
I have a few older standalone ESXi 6.5 hosts (free version) running on HPE Gen7 servers (Xeon 'Nehalem' Generation). Each has only one or two VMs and we would like to decommission these hosts with as little downtime as possible. We have a vSphere environment running vCSA 6.7, and where the hosts there are running on Gen8 hardware (ESXi 6.5, Xeon 'Sandy Bridge' generation). This is all part of an extended plan to move everything to new Gen10 hardware. The first part is getting the VMs running on these standalone hosts into this vSphere environment so we can have the availability, versatility & redundancy vSphere offers.
We plan to put the VMs running on these older standalone hosts into their own new host cluster within vSphere, but until we get those new hosts stood up and brought into vSphere, we plan to temporarily move to and run those VMs within the existing vSphere host cluster so that we can live migrate them once the new hosts are integrated into vSphere (in their own cluster) and once the vDS is extended to them.
My question is, if EVC is set to 'Sandy Bridge' on the existing vSphere host cluster, what do I need to do to connect the older standalone hosts to vSphere and migrate the VMs on them to these hosts?
My tentative plans so far, with my EVC question above fit in to each scenario:
Option 1:
1. In vSphere, add old hosts to inventory (Datacenter level, but not to the existing host cluster)
1a. Apply 60-day ESXi Evaluation license temporarily
2. Extend vDS (Distributed Switch) and vMotion network settings to old Gen7 hosts - add uplinks on standalone host to uplink group on vDS (there is already a port group on the vDS for the Vlan used on the VMs)
3. Migrate the Gen7 VMs to the Gen8 hosts [See EVC compatibility question above]
4. Remove old Gen7 hosts from inventory
5. Create new host cluster, set EVC to' Nehalem'
6. Add Gen 10 hosts (Skylake generation) to new cluster
7. Extend vDS (Distributed Switch) and vMotion network settings to new hosts - add uplinks to uplink group on vDS (there is already a port group on the vDS for the Vlan used on the VMs)
8. Migrate those VMs to new Gen10 hosts
9. Power off VMs at earliest convenience, set cluster EVC to 'Skylake' once all VMs have been power cycled and running at Skylake
Option 2:
1. In vSphere, add old hosts to inventory (Datacenter level, but not to the existing host cluster)
1a. Apply 60-day ESXi Evaluation license temporarily
2. Extend vDS (Distributed Switch) and vMotion network settings to old host - add uplinks on standalone host to uplink group on vDS (there is already a port group on the vDS for the Vlan used on the VMs)
3. Create new host cluster, set EVC to 'Nehalem'
4. Add new Gen 10 ESXi 6.7 hosts to vCenter inventory
5. Migrate the Gen7 VMs to the Gen 8 hosts [See EVC compatibility question above]
6. Remove old hosts from vCenter inventory
7. Power off VMs at earliest convenience, set cluster EVC to 'Skylake' once all VMs have been power cycled and running at Skylake
When I connect my esxi host by remote location give no peer certificate found
Hi,
I am creating a lab of vRA 8.2, and facing the issue while creating end-point. the following error appears while creating a vCenter endpoint.
Verify or check if a vCenter Template Repository is created by your System Administrator.
Hello,
I have a Windows vCenter 6.0, which STS Signing Certificate will be expired soon, what is the right procedure to renew the certification?
I have found some articles for this topic, but all of them are for vCenter 6.5 or vCenter 6.7, not for 6.0。
Thank you for your help !
BTW, i got some errors when running the checksts.py script.
I am reviewing a vCenter 6.5 installation with ESXi hosts using VSS and notice that it was configured with 2 vSwitches for iSCSI. vSwitch1 has vmk1 with an IP of 192.168.199.10 and only 1 vmnic associated. vSwitch2 has a vmk2 with an IP of 192.168.199.11 and only 1 vmnic associated as well.
I am adding new hosts and would like to simplify the networking. So my question is does it matter if you go the 2 iSCSI vSwitches per ESXi host route, or can I simplify it with just 1 vSwitch, 1 vmkernel for iSCSI, and 2 vmnics that are both in active?
Also, if I do this, will this freak out vCenter if 3 hosts have vswitch1 and vswitch2 for iSCSI, and the new hosts have just vswitch1 for iSCSI?
Thank you
Hi Community,
I have an ESXi Host that suddenly froze 2 days ago without apparent reason.
See attachment for error message.
There was no hardware failure.
I had to reboot the server and the host is running normally now.
I need to find the reason of the failure.
Is there something in the error message I can go by?
What log files should I check to find a more descriptive error message?
Thank you.
I did deploy UAG.ova file by vcenter's ovf deploy.
but uag vm's console show me "no networking detected please login and run the command
/opt/vmware/share/vami/vami_config_net" to configure the network.
so i set network with the command "/opt/vmware/share/vami/vami_config_net"
but dns server ip is not changed and ping test is no problem.
the uag [https://192.168.1.185:9443/admin/index.html] site refused connection.
i retried the UAG DEPLOY. and i checked all setting
but i couldn't my cause.
please help.
Good morning,
I have just tried to apply the Patch 15 on our vRA 7.6 installation, following the instructions in the guide. The Patch 15 is rather big, like 4.5 GB..
After 45 minutes the installation failed, thou I see no real error. As well doesnt the selfpatch.log not contain any usefull information. It says it times out.. How long should I expect it to run - do I need to adjust timeout parameters?
Can any of you point to a direct where to look - or have seen similar ? Any debug mode during the installation?
Regards, Kjeld

Hello,
I'm using a utility "storcli" to check RAID health.
Both the shared library and binary are not in "root" user path so the utility does not run easily. I can create symlinks, but these do no survive reboot.
Where can I add both the binary to "PATH" and library path so I can run this utility anywhere upon login? This is easy to do in Linux, not so easy to do in ESXi vSphere.
Thanks
I do have 20 cloned pcs as Clients for a horizon infrastructure. The problem is that due to cloning they all have the same client-id on the broker.
I found out that they are somehow saving their Client-ID after first connect.
Where does the Horizon Client save the Client-ID and how can I delete it or randomize a new one?
Hello there,
I´m copying various VMs from an old to an new cluster. I do it a really basical way (we have only 8 VMs to migrate): I copy them from the first cluster datastore (SAS Storage) to an Synology NAS with NFS (BTFRs+) and from there I copy it to the new Cluster Datastore (also a SAS Storage). I know they are transformed to Thin, whilst doing this. The first lessen I´ve learned. So for an example I copy the servername.vmdk (THICK) onto the NFS it´s an servername-flat.vmdk and an servername.vmdk (THIN of course). After copying back from the NFS to the new Cluster, it´s an servername.vmdk again, but THIN. Well I can live with this behaviour. And I already transformed a lot of VMs in the past this way. But with one VM I do really have strange problem now. Thankfully it will be replaced at the moment (it´s an RDS Server), but I would like to understand what happened. After copying this VM (again Windows Server 2012R2) and after sizing the RAM (from 32GB to 64GB) and the Disk (from 500GB to 800GB) my pagefile.sys was gone. It´s not on C and after one of the reboots (I belive after installing the VMWare Tools) a windows appeared where I should set my Virtual Memory. But when you set it and reboot (even if you open this windows again) the setting is gone. So the server is running now without a pagefile.sys. I searched all over the web, but I didn´t found something like this. Anyone of you had recently such kind of problem? The server itself is working fine, every tool is up an running. There are 20 users working on it. The new one is up and running again, so it´s not really important, but I´m really interested in it.
The old system was vSphere ESXi 6 (U3)
The new system is vSphere ESXi 7 (Dell optimized A02)
Datastore old: VMFS6
Datastore new: VMFS6
NFS: BTRFS (Synology)
Thanks in advance,
Stefan
I am looking for a way to allow a user to choose their AD bind location at request time in vRA 8.1. We were able to achieve this in 7.6 by overriding a custom property and away it went, so now I'm trying to achieve that same behavior within 8.x. I've already got AD integration configured and I can see vRA creating/deleting computer objects in the configured OU. Now I'm looking for a way to override the location.
I understand it may be possible if we bypass the use of AD integration in favor of event subscriptions and custom workflows. I've also read a few users here complain that AD integration has a few bugs in it where objects are not getting created. Ideally I'd first like to give AD integration a shot before looking at the subscription method.
Any thoughts are welcomed. Thanks for reading.
Hi,
We are using guest customization on RHEL8 and configuring ipadress, hostname, etc works fine. However running a customization script did't funtion well. vRA verison 8.1 and vSphere version 7
We conduct the test by adding the following script, according to https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/74880:
#!/bin/sh echo "$(date) - $1" >>/tmp/customization.log
After the vm been created the /tmp/customization.log file did't created in the deployed VM.

Any suggestion ?
After installing version 16, I realized that the Shared-VM feature was removed and there is no "hostd" service on Linux but in windows "hostd" exist but there is not any section for configuration in GUI or CLI!
this a bug or completely removed!?
I have followed all the steps from DEM_Update_MigZip - Samples - VMware {code}.
I can confirm that it works perfectly with profiles which are not backed up with One Drive.
In out environment One Drive is used for backing up users Desktop and Documents folders for example E:\user\username\OneDrive......\Desktop DEM creates archive (migration.zip) as described in Modernizing VDI for a New Horizon | VMware persistent disk migration part, but I think registries which are exported from old persistent machine are still pointing to this E:\ driver (Persistent Disk) and this causes the error message and users Desktop and Documents get corrupted.

When connecting from laptops installed with various versions of Windows 10, the smart card login works as it should.
You select connection server, enter PIN and you get connected and logged into your Windows desktop.

CertUtil: -SCInfo command completed successfully.
When connecting from Zero clients (terra 2), to the same desktops using same smartcard reader and card, initially looks like it would work.
When you insert smart card into the reader, the client starts automatically connecting to the server and prompts for PIN. Once you enter the PIN you get to select the pool and after you click connect you land on to the windows login screen, where you must enter password.
So basically looks like smart card checks up against connection server since you are connected without asking for username and password, but then windows don't see the smart card to perform loging into the desktop.

In both cases the certificates are visible in MMC certificates snappin nad can be used in web applications.
Any idea why wouldn't smart card authentication worked from zero clients ? Redirection seems to work since certificates are visible in session and can be used, but then again certutil errors out in case of zero clients.
